The reality that we are the creators of our own life, that we have the power, agency, and creative capacity to live the life we dream of can feel completely overwhelming. Especially if we look around and feel so far away from that vision. It's easy to start feeling that we aren't good enough or are somehow failing. But in these moments it's important to remember that big changes will take care of themselves when we tend to the small things. Fresh flowers on the table. A new set of sheets. Rearranging a shelf with pictures and objects that remind you of the things that mean most. These small creative acts can add up to the monumental shifts that we crave. But honestly... more important than the inevitable huge future shifts, it can add a bit more joy and light and love and agency into your life right now.
I was recently interviewed about cultivating creativity, ( you can read the whole article here!) and was asked if I had any recommendations about how to welcome creativity into one's life. I loved this question because it reconnected me to a bit wisdom I had picked up a long time ago, but was temporarily forgetting (in a BIG way). I wrote:
"Welcoming creativity is such a beautiful way to phrase this. It’s very much the truth. Making room for beauty, creativity and joy in your life is a gentle thing. I would say, focus on making beautiful spaces in your home and environment with the intention of welcoming even more beauty in. Light a candle. Frame that piece of art or special photograph. Making the intention will create the space."
Heeding my own advice I have set out to do that in our new home. Little corners. Little pictures that bring joys. Small shifts that will take care of the big ones.
I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend and can find some time and some place for a small but mighty creative act.
